Rating: 5
Summary: Vivid, intense, and gripping
Comment: A damn fine read from a damn fine new author. The book is a vivid, intense, and gripping story of the struggles of a man trying to cope with a challenging present caused by his criminal past. Doc, the protagonist, is the most compelling and complex character I have encountered in a long time. Worthy of the honors it has already received.

Rating: 5
Summary: Hard to believe this is a first novel
Comment: After reading Mr. Parsons' short story in the collection Women Seeking Men, I searched for his other works. As luck would have it, Leaving Disneyland was just released. It is hard to believe that this is Mr. Parsons' first novel. The level of beauty in the language is tremendous; the plot is somber, yet heartening; and the vivid descriptions remind me why it's best to stay out of jail. Most impressive, though, is how much I felt and cared for the main character, Doc. Mr. Parsons has created a human being with words on paper.

Rating: 5
Summary: Man oh man
Comment: This book is incredible. The author has taken on a scary subject and shown an uncanny compassion toward the plight of his character. Language that reminds me of Trumbo's letters and a protagonist who defies cliches. A solid world created by a solid newcomer. Good work!
