Summary: A truly great book
Comment: A well crafted and written story about a forgotten time in ancient history. Michael Curtis Ford, as always, has done a superior job in his research and undoubtedly is one of the great historical novelists of our time -- akin to Mary Renault. The battlescenes are spot on; gritty, gory and violent and properly interspersed throughout the book. There are other subplots that are terrific and at times rather shocking. All in all this is an excellent second novel on a subject matter that has not been covered in decades. The struggle between two lifelong friends eventually pitting them against one another is poignant and tragic. A wonderful addition to not only its genre but literature as a whole. Given today's slapdash efforts and shoddy research or that too many novels recycle covered ground, this is a breath of freash air.

Summary: -Superlative historical fiction
Comment: Mike Ford has done it again -- better, if that is possible than his first book The Ten Thousand.
Using Caesarius as the narrator of the story we trace Julian's rise to power and subsequent fall. Again the author brings to life histories long gone or forgotten. The battle scenes are superb and G&L draws heavily on ancient sources. Kudos to the author for his superior research. An epic novel about one of the most important time periods of imperial Rome. The relationship between Caesarius and Julian are fleshed out very well and the struggle between Christians and Pagans is beautifully crafted. Gods and Legions is actually an important book examining absolute power with philosophy and morals eerily reminiscent of today's socio-political climate. At times shocking, at times profound, the book does not disappoint in any capacity. A must read for anyone interested in politics, religion and military affairs, not to mention fans of historical fiction.

Summary: A truly recommended read
Comment: Ten thousand reasons made me read this epic. I wasn't disappointed. I played many parts. I was lost in Gaul. I nearly died in Persia. In truth I don't think I would have survived very long in those days. Michael Curtis Ford is a great story teller - could we compare him to a grown up G A Henty. Or perhaps we are just school boys for ever! Read the other reviews for a gist of the story. Better just read the book.
