Summary: Christian Science: Complete Science, Theology, and Medicine
Comment: Is this book, by Barbara Wilson, fair and truthful?

If you were having a bad dream, a nightmare, wouldn't you be grateful if someone shook you and tried to waken you from that dream?

For more than a century Christian Science has touched and influenced millions, and when properly understood awakes its students from the illusion of life in matter and its countless disappointments into a more harmonious life.

This logical science has destroyed the illusion of:

Severe burns, broken bones, cancer, consumption; drug and alcohol addictions, rheumatism, blindness, polio, brain tumors, ulcers, asthma, recurring headaches, fevers, anemia, anorexia, insomnia, mental retardation, heart attacks, high blood pressures, sinusitis, paralysis, invalidism, bad effects from accidents, psychosis, schizophrenia, depression, madness, suicidal tendencies, atheism, unemployment, poverty, loneliness, conflict at work and many more.

Millions have been protected, restored to health, reassured, comforted, inspired, changed, sheltered, fed, improved, and transformed.

Mary Baker Eddy writes "Mortal mind is an illusion; as much in our waking moments as in the dreams of sleep... God would not be omnipotent if there were in reality another mind creating or governing man or the universe".

The ideas that originate from the divine Mind, or God, and that are true substance of supply, never run out. This supply of ideas is seen in our experience the appropriate form of health, happiness, food, clothing housing and so forth.

Mary Baker Eddy gives the divine Mind all the credit; the object of this Science is not to heal but to regenerate and purify the character; the healing, and personal improvement is the effect of a higher understanding.

Summary: It makes you think
Comment: My father was raised in a household of three women. His mother and aunt were CS, his grandmother was not. He respected women all his life and at a time (the 50s) when few men did. Long after he abandoned his childhood faith he respected the CS determination, optimism, and power of both sexes to achieve worthwhile goals. Wilson's book helped me understand why he was able to do that.

Comment: Barbara Wilson's writing style is brilliant. She tells a profound and sad story that is probably more common than we know. I had to laugh when I read the review from the 29 year old man whose life has been improved "ten-fold" by Christian Science. I too was born into the religion. Luckily I had the "presence of mind" (CS Lingo) to insist upon medical care beginning at a young age. I am all for religious/spiritual freedom of expression. But Christian Science is not about freedom of expression. It is about denying the existence of ANYTHING unpleasant. There is nothing scientific about it. It's followers have a strict and paranoid code of secrecy about their beliefs which seeps into their daily lives and affects all relationships. Wilson's book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand a friend of loved one's negative experience with Christian Science.
