Summary: getting better all the time
Comment: The Let's Go books tend to improve every year, so it's not surprising that some things in this version are out of date. If you are planning a trip to the Middle East, buy a more up-to-date version of the book!
That said, I used this book in 1998 to travel around Egypt, Israel, and Jordan, and I found it useful, insightful, and (yes) funny too. The Let's Go authors share more interesting observations, pay closer attention to detail, and express themselves more clearly than the authors of most other travel guides I've used (and I have used many).
The maps in the book were definitely a weak point. I suggest taking along a supplemental map or two, especially if visiting the big cities.

Summary: AVOID THIS GUIDE-BOOK!
Comment: I have travelled extensively now for about 10 years, and have encountered scores of bad guidebooks as well as some excellent ones, but never have I seen one quite as abysmal as this edition of Let's Go. There is nothing, absoultely nothing worse than a bad guide book when, for example, you are arriving late at night in a foreign town where you do not speak a word of the local langauge and need not only an accurate map but detailed information on where to find a place to stay. In Acre (Israel) I arrived around midnight and had made bookings at a youth hostel so thought i was all-set until I openend this guidebook to check the map and found that the main bus station was not even listed on it, and neither was the hostel where I made the booking, even though I found its phone number in this guide. So taking a big gulp and looking around me disorientedly, having no idea where i was and how i could get to my hostel, with no cabs in sight, and with no Hebrew or Arabic on my tongue, and all shops closed, I wandered lost for about an hour, sweating with all my luggage until a kind local with a car had pity on me. This is simply ONE incident of this guide becoming an obstacle at every turn through Egypt and Israel. Without a doubt, this is the worst guide book I have EVER used, and I am not even thinking of the bad sense of humor and the facile commentary on monuments--at the practical level, this guide will make sure you get lost, spend hours waiting in situations where you do not have to, give rave reviews to absolute grungy flea pits, and generally make sure your travelling burden is 10 times worse than your back-pack. If anyone suggests you buy this, flee the other way. Take it from me who learned the hard way, this guide will make for a truly difficult trip that does not have to be so difficult.
