Summary: a new understanding of ethnic identity
Comment: This book addresses the problem of "race" and ethnic identity for bi-ethnic people. The author focuses on mixed race among Japanese Americans, Jewish Americans and Black Americans, as well as the phenomenon of intermarriage in the military. For each group, he takes an historical approach of traditional ideas about miscegenation in each group, and then follows through with examples of intermarriage in each group and the reactions on behalf of each group involved. The approach is a mix of history, sociology and ethnic studies. Although limited to only three groups among which racial mixing has occurred, each study is quite weighty and comprehensive.
