Summary: Harriet Harris' "Faith without Hostages"
Comment: An active spiritual life can bring us great peace and comfort, but these come in and through trials and temptations. When Christ said, "My peace I leave with you" he did so only after a faithful struggle confronting injustice in the world. Along the way he trained disciples to take up his struggle, and in this book we are reminded of the need to continue this in our own lives. Harriet Harris' book begins with Jesus moving toward Jerusalem, where in the sight of his followers he will die, still committed to the active fight against injustice and it ends reminding us that in his physical absence, we are to live by the spirit he sent in his place: the spirit of peace. The beginning and end of this book enclose a journey of the Christian life which is a call to commitment and renewal. Throughout the 23 meditations we are called to reflect on central movements of the life of Christ and followers of Christ. Here we are faced with harsh realities and hard questions without false expectations. Each chapter begins with a scriptural focus and variously take up the challenge of finding our spiritual centre, hearing God even when he appears to be silent, of finding ourselves through others, of recognizing our ability to make contributions that extend the fight against injustice. But we are reminded too that there are times when we can be very alone in our hurting, needing a path to God as the source of consolation. Here we are confronted with the Gospel, but we are not in the wilderness. Harriet Harris is a wise and subtle guide, requiring us to ever move ahead in our journey toward what it means to be free in Christ and servants of the Spirit. The meditations are designed around the seasons of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. But as these are always to be present in our daily walk of life, so the book is relevant throughout the year. Present in this volume of reflections are questions to motivate our thought with prayerful pauses to settle the spirit.
This book is recommended for those who take spiritual life seriously and want to reflect upon serious questions which arise in our lives, but ultimately it is a book about faith in the living Christ, and the power this faith brings to transform our lives.
