Rating: 5
Summary: Ready-to-Use = Good for Me
Comment: I'm about to student teach on the block schedule. Having never even attended school on a block schedule, I felt very unprepared for keeping students engaged for an hour and a half at a time. Thankfully, this book is well-organized and formatted so that at a glance, I can insert these strategies into my lesson and unit plans. The ideas range from the practical (anticipatory sets, attention getters) to the memorable (great ways to end units and make the lessons last). This was a great buy.

Summary: Great resource for active learning strategies.
Comment: As a math teacher working in a block schedule for the first time, I was looking for a resource that would help me move from a very traditional lecture format to a more active one. I found this book, which my sister (an English teacher) recommended, to be an excellent source for inspiration.

Silberman provides active strategies that create an opportunity for students to be involved and engaged. Very readable in format, the book provides a wide variety of strategies which are not content specific. My students are very positive about the activities we try in class. In fact, they insist that these activities really help them understand. In addition, research indicates these active experiences should help my students retain the concepts and skills on which we work.

I know my sister has used these strategies not only in her English classroom, but also in the training of teachers, medical personnel, and educators for long-distance learning. She says it's a "must." My principal was delighted when I shared this book with him and he plans to purchase it for the professional library at our high school.
