Summary: Kleck fails to prove anything
Comment: Despite all of his efforts, Kleck fails to prove anything. Kleck is most famous for the survey he conducted that concluded that about 2.5 million people in America use guns each year to prevent a crime. In his survey of 5,000 people about 1.3% of the respondents replied that they had used a gun to defend themselves in the last year. About 1.3% of the US population is 2.5 million. The basic flaw in this method is that Kleck relies way too much on people's honesty. If only 1% of the respondents had answered the survey dishonestly, then that would render most of the Kleck's conclusions invalid. Anyone that knows anything about statistics knows that it is naive to assume that 100% of the respondents will answer the survey truthfully. Kleck, however, does correctly point out that the drop in crime that John Lott observed in his book More Guns Less Crime was not due to more guns but probably due to other factors.

Rating: 4
Summary: A dry but comprehensive overview of gun control studies
Comment: This is an update of Kleck's earlier book, "Point Blank", which won the Michael J. Hindelang Award in 1993. The award is given by the American Society of Criminology annually for a book published during the previous two to three years that makes the most outstanding contribution to research in criminology.

Even if you disagree with Kleck's conclusions, "Targeting Guns" is an essential addition to your library if you are interested in the issue of gun control. No other book gives such a detailed and comprehensive overview of the research that has been done on this subject.

Rating: 1
Summary: Pure fantasy
Comment: Most of the people reviewing this book are believers in defensive gun use who like the fact that Kleck's research supports their position.

Yet, you will see that even they say his methodology doesn't add up.

In fact, it has been shown that 20 million US citizens have actually seen a being from outer space using Kleck's methodology!

Frightening that this book is being used to guide gun control policy.
