Summary: learn OO in 'design patter' way
Comment: There are 2 ways of learning new concepts and principles:
1. learn principles first, then try to use them
2. observe good implementations first, then learn to appreciate the principles behind them
The authors successfully convince me that the 2nd way is the better way of learning a paradigm like OO. The authors first give us a little principles (Chapter 1), and then intorduce to us the good designs one by one (Part III, IV, V). While explaining these good design solutions (design patterns), authors didn't forget to stop and show us what we have been through, and the principles we can draw from our experience.
This is really a joyful and mind-shifting reading.
This book is not trying to teach you everything about design pattern and OO. But it lays a very sold foundation in your brain, and force you to think in a new perspective.
Of course, you should read GoF after or along with reading this one.
Also recommend:
Craig Larman: Applying UML and Design Pattern (this book puts the things you learned into real developement process)

Summary: Buy this book!
Comment: I'm a VB programmer, and I've read a couple of books on design patterns, even ones that look at it from a VB perspective. This book beats them all, even though the code snippets are mostly in Java. It starts simple and builds up to a great discussion of all the patterns that's easy to understand.
Better still, it looks at objects in a new way, and gives you plenty of "real world" examples of objects to cement the concepts in your head.
If you know the basics of OO, and want to get into design patterns, this is for you.

Summary: Great introductory to pattern use! EASY TO READ!
Comment: Just recently, I've been doing OO design in a team at work. My OO experience was limited so I always felt that there must be a more standard or cleaner way of writing OO code. This book has been a great review of the OO basics through its use of patterns. It's, very simply, helped me to realize when I have used patterns in my designs and didn't even know it. After reading this book I was able to greatly optimized my designs and probably save tons of time coding. Also, when I look for an introduction book on a subject, readability is the highest priority. This book was easy to understand and read. The author does an amazing job at drawing parallels to design that help shape your train of thought in a positive way. This is a great book for a beginner and I'd reccomend it to anyone starting out.
