Summary: A Solid "Foundation"
Comment: Great stuff.
The authors demonstrate that there is a solution to the major issue confronting the database world today - the integration of relational and object technologies - based on the full implementation of the relational model (which has been around for over 30 years and is based on sound mathematics, unlike some of the newer alternative "models"). This includes full support for complex data types and, yes, a logically consistent model for type inheritance (!).
This book is not about hyping a flavor-of-the-month "new technology" - it delivers on the promise of the title by establishing a solid theoretical foundation for the future of database technology.
The authors succeed in presenting some very difficult material in a manner which should be comprehensible to any database professional. It is well worth the time and effort required to digest the material. Ignore it at your own risk.
