Summary: A wonderful account of pre-Industrial resource realities
Comment: Professor John Landers tackles a question that we all have in the back of our minds: what was life like when we only had the muscle power of humans and draft animals to aid our productivity? The answers--in terms of economy, warfare, and the spacial constraints on activities--are spelled out in this thought-provoking research. Along with description and analysis, the author provides statistics on a variety of issues, such as the trade shipping time across the Mediterranean between various ports, the spacial constraints of armies, and many other topics. Professor Landers is a noted author on population, who in this book examines "time, space, and population" and their connections to the "organic" resources used prior to the Industrial Revolution.
I found the book enjoyable to read and instructional to boot. While the story is focused on Western Europe, history buffs who enjoy economics and warfare will find this a worthwhile read.
