Summary: A good book for the legally challeneged
Comment: I have heard people say that Election 2000 will be for my generation what Watergate was for the generation before us. That is, the cause of a loss of faith in the government, or in this case, the Supreme Court. Like many Americans I think, I was confused and angered when the Supreme Court stopped the hand recount and handed the election to Bush. And although I didn't understand the legal reasoning, what seemed obvious to me at the time was that the Court's decision was based on politics and politics alone. Dershowitz's book both confirmed this suspicion and helped me to gain an understanding of the Court's decision despite my lack of knowledge of Constitutional and election law. Although he may have repeated himself in his attack on the majority justices, he certainly proved to me that "the decision in the Florida election case may be ranked as the single most corrupt decision in Supreme Court history..." A must read for anyone who felt betrayed by the Supreme Court's decision last winter and is looking for some answers.

Summary: Too long . . but still good
Comment: I enjoyed this book and Dershowitz's commentary. I agree with Dershowitz, about the 2000 election but also think that his argument could have been much shorter. Overall, however, it was a quick and informative read written easily for all of us that are not accustomed to legalise. Skim this book and get the main ideas, but don't spend too long - there are too many other good books out there.

Summary: A Must-Read--regardless of your politics!!!
Comment: Alan Dershowitz's principles inform his politics, not vice versa. What that means is, though he's a liberal and he voted for Gore, he is not concerned with who won the election. Professor Dershowitz is concerned with how the Supreme Court could have stepped-in and made a decision that seems to contradict both the justices previously-stated principles and all established constitutional law. As he states early on, Bush may very well have won the recount. That's not relevant. What is relevant is that there is some very strong evidence that the court only voted the way that it did because the majority of Justices were afraid that Gore WOULD have won the recount. If that's true, that's a direct violation of their judicial oaths and puts the integrity of the highest court in the land, indeed the world, in doubt. And that is frightening.

Forget politics, Dershowitz breaks down his case like a teacher of the law, which of course he is. And he textures his book with countless footnotes and quotes from people on all sides of the spectrum (including many Bush supporters) who feel that what the Supreme Court did in Bush v. Gore was a travesty of the highest order.

If you criticize Dershowitz's argument before reading it because of his politics, you are misssing the point. If you think his argument is irrelevant becuase Bush would have won anyway you are missing the point. If this subject interests you, you should read this book, hear his argument and decide for yourself. No one, and I mean no one, gets to be a full professor of law at Harvard by being stupid. The man is a genius and his argument is too compelling to be missed. I think he's dead-on right, and the truth that he presents frightens me. But even if you disagree with his perspective at the end of the book, you'll be glad you've read it. Professor Dershowitz has written a book of vital importance to our country.
