Summary: Can't wait for the movie version.
Comment: Now this is entertainment. Bookish dad joins eager son on a boy scout adventure into the great outdoors where both encounter their hopes and fears through a succession of comic and sometimes dramatic experiences. And that's just for starters--add an insightful exploration of the history of Scouting in america and various musings on the meaning of fatherhood, family and community amidst the distractions and disoriented values of a competitive consumerist culture and you've got what I think is a minor modern classic. This is a fun and funny book with a lot more on its mind than just an unlikely foray into the woods. Someone in hollywood should pounce cause Bill Murray is due for a big comeback and this could be it.

Summary: A Must Read for Summer
Comment: I am a suburban mom with a 10 year old son (non-scout, couch potato). I could not put this book down. I laughed out loud and I cried. Applebome's personal growth and conflicts within the Boy Scouts had me on a roller coaster. At one moment the wholesome, back to nature bonding he enjoyed with his son had me wanting to sign my son up with the local troop, while a few pages later, his honest discussions with other Scoutmasters about the moral dilemmas they found themselves in had me considering a letter of protest to the same local troop. His(kinder, gentler) Woody Allen comedic humor toward all outdoor adventures made the moments of enlightenment all the more sweet. This book will make you want to drag your kids away from the computer screen and run to the nearest park for a hike in the woods. My only regret is tht I didn't wait a few more weeks to pick it up because I doubt I'll be able to find a more enjoyable summer read.

Summary: Is there a merit badge for literary accomplishment?
Comment: Proof once again that in the hands of a talented writer with a first rate intellect and an irreverence for life, even a seemingly unremarkable subject can be made memorable and moving. Putting aside all there is to learn about the fascinating history of the Boy Scouts of America, and all the genuinely hilarious comedy of the author's foray into the great and not so great outdoors--there is something deeper and more enduring going on in these pages. Peter Applebome has something to say about how we have come to define our lives, our culture, our manhood and our children. This adventure story (which is what this book really is) provides an endlessly entertaining context for an exploration of some of the most basic concerns of an entire generation. Reading this book will probably provide you with more insight and food for thought than a dozen dry tomes on child rearing or American society today. But more than anything, this book is a treat for the soul--a reminder that we are all born into simplicity and if we heed what is best in ourselves and our nature, we just may avoid dying of complications.
