Summary: One of the best books I've Read This Year
Comment: This book, My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George is a great book. The main character, Sam Gribley, runs away from his New York City apartment one day to seek a new and independent life. Sam chooses to live in the Catskill Mountain because his Grandfather once owned a farm there. While Sam is there, he meets many friends. Some of his new friends are people, and some are animals. Sam's best friend and helper is a falcon he calls Frightful. Sam also shows lots of courage and tolerance in this book. Sam was very courageous during the blizzard that hit the mountain. Sam shows tolerance because he eats things he's never eaten before such as rabbit, crayfish, and vension. This is a great book and anyone who likes adventure should read it.

Summary: A memorable treatice on simple living
Comment: It's been years since I first read this book when I was about 12, but I still remember with clarity this delightfull tale of a boy from the city who decides to leave to find a better life for himself.
Much of this reads as a how-to guide for a survivalist, learning to make a home, build a fire, how to forage and hunt, how to tan leather, and the trials and challenges associated with this lifestyle. We read of Sam as he faces these chalenges and learnes to cope with them to continue his chosen lifestyle. I was inspired as a young teen to learn more about all the concepts within this book, and learned enough that it made my camping experiences much more fun as I tried out some of the concepts like making a fishook from whittled twigs and bark(I think I needed more practice though, I didn't catch anything).
My Side of the Mountain shaped how I think about life, and is part of the reason I ultimately chose to live frugally and simply today, and am working towards having a sustaiable garden and small livestock. This is a book I plan to read again even as an adult, and will be happy to pass it on to my children when they are old enough to read at this level.
If you like the survival theme, you may also enjoy "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert A. Heinlein, which is a sci-fi version of survival in the wilderness.

Summary: Interesting and informative
Comment: Written by Gene Craighead George, My Side of the Mountain explores one boy's quest for peace and quiet and his realization of what it means to be alone. An adolescent boy, Sam, escapes the chaos of his family's crowded New York apartment. Sam runs away, to the Catskill Mountains in search of space and independence. Sam feels like a free man up in the mountains. He learns to live off the land. He manages to ward off reporters, tourists, and hikers, so that he may preserve his secret living quarters. Sam faces many hardships, but his determination, to live on his own, helps him persevere. Through his interaction with neighboring animals and his friendship with his pet falcon, Sam survives hardships on the lonely mountain. Sam is content with his life in the mountains, but he realizes that he misses human conversation.
This interesting and exciting book shows Sam's journey away from his fellow humans and his need to be amongst them again. Sam's great journey is inspiring to anyone who has ever just wanted to escape for a while. The plot is developed through Sam's struggle to survive nature and his inner conflicts.
I recommend this book to people of all ages. I believe this story appeals to children because of the adventure and excitement of running away to an unknown place. Adults will find it appealing because they understand the need to be away from the chaos of crowds and cities to find a haven of peace and quiet. Our hectic lifestyles help us relate to Sam's desire for simplicity.
