Summary: The Devil's Arithmetic
Comment: Devil's Arithmetic is about the Holocaust. Hannah goes with her family to celebrate a Jewish holiday called Passover. She really doesn't want to go but when she gets there she'll need to act serious about why she's there. As part of her religion, she opens the door and when she gets on the other side she gets transported somewhere but she doesn't know where. A lady named Gitl claims to be Hannah's Aunt. She had told Hannah that her name is Chaya and that she got very sick in Lublin and that her two parents died. Gitl says her brother Shemuel is getting married and that they are going to the wedding. They arrived at the wedding but there are Nazis (A German group in World War 2) there that arrested them because they are Jews. They all get put on a train and get sent to concentration camps. She gets separated from the others and they shave her hair. Hannah meets a girl named Rivka, who tells her a lot of great stuff to keep the both of them alive! The Devil's Arithmetic is an awesome book. At first it starts out really slow and boring but after a while you can't put it down. The names in the book are really hard to pronounce (Like Chaya and Gitl) but after they get into the concentration camp you'll get so into the book it doesn't really matter. As long as you get the main idea of the names it's all right. You can make your own versions of the names. During the concentration camp it feels you're in there when Hannah got her hair shaved off. It is so thrilling as if you've keep reading to find out what happens next. Like what happens to Hannah? Does she die? Things like that, so during the book you're asking yourself questions. There are some sad parts, like when Hannah's friend died in the train when they got moved to the concentration camp. All in all, I think Jane Yolen is a great author. She takes some fantasy and puts you in time to make you feel you're in the book, and so she puts some realistic fiction in it too for a spectacular book! The book has an outstanding ending! It will surprise you like you would have never have thought possible. Some parts may be sad and sickening but it's the Holocaust it's going to be. There are always surprises around every page. In the beginning it is kind of confusing and slow, don't let that stop you because the ending is terrific!!!

Summary: The Devils Arthmetic
Comment: The Devils Arithmetic is a book abut a Jewish girl named Hannah. Hannah lived in our time but hated going to with her family to Passover Saders. That night in the Sadder when welcoming in Elijah, (the prophet) Hannah fond herself in 1842 Poland in a whole different family. She started to get to know the family and learned that she was about to go to a wedding. While at the wedding her and everybody there were captured by the Nazis and taken to a concentration camp. This depressing tells about how Hannah learns that she should be happy being with her family in the peaceful Seders.
After reading The Devils Arithmetic I understood the Holocaust better after seeing it from Hannah's eyes. I am also and my Grandparents were n the Holocaust. I really don't think i will ever complain about being with my family again after reading This book.

Summary: When present meets the past.
Comment: This book is a really good book. So much so that the word good, in it's self, does not do it justice. The morals in it and the facts are mind blowing. I was literally left in awe at the way it was written and the amount of feeling it was done with. The story is about this girl named Hannah. She is a Jewish girl who doesn't understand why they always have to remember her past. She thinks that it's a dumb thing to do and is worthless because the past is passed. But her outlook on life changes when she goes to open the door for the prophet Elijah and finds herself in the past. She ends up in the body of her aunt's old friend, who goes by the name Chaya, through which she witnesses the horror and sorrow of the Holocaust. This book is worth reading for kids of all ages. Hide these children from the past, and the darkness of the world only makes us ignorant to it when we get older. I know that I will not be blind to the truth of hate and violence after the deeper glimpse this book gave me. I hope all who read this get a good mesage from it, and learn more about a past that could happen, to anyone, again.
