Summary: Big Letdown
Comment: I bought this book because it seemed like an interesting journey into the world of ethics, which we all know is sometimes a very scary place. But about halfway through the book, in chapter 7 (Judging Others), I was astonished by the sheer contradiction Halberstam showed in his comments regarding dictatorship vs. allowing people to have their own opinions. I quote, from p. 132, "We usually adopt the 'whatever makes them happy' attitude to avoid confronting people whose views we think foolish. This smug response is almost always inappropriate, but it's particularly obnoxious when it comes to our friends. If we care about someone, we have to care about their standards as well. There's a political application here as well: When governments decide that the people are better off not knowing the truth, you can begin to hear the frightening voice of dictatorship."
Caring about someone else's standards has nothing to do with "truth," as Halberstam would have us believe. Maybe he doesn't realize that he's actually implying there is only one "truth" out there, and we should bend our friends' minds to that "truth" if they're not already there. Personally, I was disgusted by this selfish statement and very disappointed in the book as a result. I had had a few worries about some of the things he had said earlier in the book, but this was the last straw for me. I wrote this review to let others know what kind of book they're buying and maybe they'll think twice about buying a book which advocates forcing your beliefs on other people in the name of "truth".

Summary: Excellent source for advice
Comment: To be brief: the book is an excellent (and right to the point) source for advice on issues where we usually find ourselves dealing with the "moral dilemma". It helps open the eyes; or for those with eyes open already, it helps keep the vision from getting blurry.
Rating: 1
Summary: disappointing
Comment: The book is thought provoking, but there are no inspired solutions here. Interesting theories, but Halberstam's application's are often hypocritical, short-sighted and self-serving rather than based on moral imperatives.
