Summary: Brilliant, should be reprinted
Comment: One of the most outstanding works of History I have read. Though short and narrowly focused, the story of China's "awakening" to the West is told in large part by a narrative of letters written by those involved, even tangentially, with the Waking of China. The personal touch of the letters keeps this history from becoming a rote list of obscure dates, people and places, and manages to make you forget you are studying a piece of history. GET IT.
