Summary: Erica's review
Comment: Unicorn Dreams is a very good book to read. It is about a boy imagining about a unicorn. His friends teased him. The unicorn always follows him... The pictures are beautiful.
Rating: 4
Summary: A charming fantasy for the Pre-K to 1st or 2nd grade crowd
Comment: My nearly 6 year old daughter absolutely loved this book. The lovely illustrations are certainly part of the attraction, particularly the cover illustration which really highlights the relationship between the boy and the unicorn. There are some nice lessons to be found in the story. The boy, Danny, is initially the only one who can see the unicorn, and as a result, he endures a fair amount of teasing from his classmates (and to some degree his teacher, inappropriately). Despite this, Danny continues to believe in the unicorn, and is not the least bit inhibited about expressing it. In the end, he gets his payoff as the naysayers become believers, and are finally able to see the unicorn (This reminded me of the same theme used in the film "Field of Dreams").
While we just read the book and enjoyed it, it could be used to facilitate discussions about teasing, standing up for one's beliefs, and the distinction between fantasy or reality.
