Summary: A key to success...
Comment: I used this book to study the testing format for the SCJP exam together with The Java Programming Language and The Java Language Specification for details where I needed them. After reading this book and working all the examples and taking all the practice exams, I felt comfortably prepared to take the Java Programmer exam, which I passed today with 95%.
I'm convinced that if you know Java at least to the point of being able to write simple programs, then this is the only ***exam study guide*** you need.
That said, I highly recommend supplementing the study guide with a good tutorial -- either a book or the free ones from Sun -- and a fair amount of time at the keyboard typing, running, breaking and fixing code. Then, spend a few days or weeks taking practice exams to get familiar with the types of things you'll see on the exam. (By the way, this book comes with two electronic exams and a lot of end-of-chapter questions, all of which I thought were very close to the real thing.)
Thanks for a great book, Kathy and Bert (and all the editors and reviewers who assisted K & B).

Summary: This book + 3 weeks of study = 91% for me
Comment: I cannot rate this book high enough. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates have put together a fantastic guide for passing the test. The tone is very casual, but they cover everything you need to pass the exam in depth. I had about six months of experience with Java prior to purchasing the book, and I found that it filled in many gaps in my knowledge that I hadn't known I had.
The book has a set of 20 or so questions at the end of each chapter which help to cement your knowledge. Also, the book comes with 2 mock exams whose questions closely mimic the difficulty and style of those I found on the exam.
I do have one caveat though...only purchase this book if you are pursuing the SCJP. This book has good information for those interested in becoming a SCJD, but the bulk of the book is devoted to preparing you to become a certified programmer, not developer.
If you're pursuing the SCJP, this book should be the only one you'll need.

Summary: This Book SAVES you Time!
Comment: The SJCP exam has a lot of questions about what is legal or illegal. This book tells you exactly that and it saves my time! Many experienced programmers still can be perplexed with tricky questions and the authors do a great job in dealing with those traps. Your search for the best SJCP preparation is over, get this book and start reading it everyday and you will PASS the exam with Flying Color like me! Thanks Kathy and Bert, I wonder why you didn't write this book 3 years ago?
