Title: Windows 2000 & Windows Server 2003 Clustering & Load Balancing by Robert J. Shimonski ISBN: 0-07-222622-6 Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media Pub. Date: 09 April, 2003 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $49.99 |

Rating: 2
Summary: Semi-accurate technical content, extremely poor writing.
Comment: This is without a doubt, the most poorly-written technical reference I've ever had the displeasure of reading. I agree with the other reviewer who picked out the numerous Windows 2003 Server errors - this book was rushed to press, and should have waited for the final release instead of being based on RC2.
I cannot believe a professional editor gave this book their stamp of approval. I have to take breaks every dozen or so pages, not because the concepts are too difficult, but because the author's akward sentences make my head ache.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the only book on the subject. I would stick to using whitepapers and web resources.

Summary: Good for intermediate level understanding
Comment: This book is great if you want to learn about Windows clustering. It isn't, however, so great if you already have good exposure and understanding of Windows 2000\2003 clustering and want information on cutting edge technical knowledge and troubleshooting. Furthermore, the author's writings of Windows 2003 clustering is based on its Release Candidate version. Many of the best refinements of Windows 2003 clustering (like automatic the rebuild of the quorum log if it is deleted) isn't discussed. Taking into account of the dearth of Windows 2000\2003 clustering books out there, this is one of the best.

Summary: Exceptionally Well Written
Comment: I ussually keep opinions to myself of what I read and what helps me the most, every book has a different spin on technology. This spin however, I liked a lot. I think this book is well written and has a lot to offer. I currently work on a 22 server farm, and we need to cluster a set of servers. We also have mandatory orders to upgrade to 2003. I thought this book would be perfect as it covers both aspects which are the upgrade from 2000 to 2003 as well as learning how to cluster and load balance both 2000 and 2003. There is also a section that shows how to upgrade a 2000 cluster. Since we are starting from scratch, this book helped us to completely plan our deployment. Now, we just need to act on the plan. If you are looking to cluster or load balance 2000 or 2003, then this is your book. For good clustering info on just 2000, I used the Windows 2000 Clustering and Load Balancing Handbook by Joe Lamb. The two of these books were all I needed.
