Rating: 3
Summary: Introductory to lower intermediate information-terse
Comment: Book covers, from a practical view, all the basics and introduces enough advanced topics such that a knowledgeable reader will know there is a LOT more to routing that what is covered in this book. Book is not sufficient to configure a cisco router properly beyond absolute basic operation. Author injects personal opinion in many discussions without factual correlation using any specific examples. A good introductory book, for persons with computing backgrounds, presenting the many facets of routing and complexity of internetworking in a multiprotocol environment. Did not buy, not a comprehensive tutorial, and to shallow for reference.

Summary: Excellent Book for New and Intermediate Cisco Router Admins
Comment: When I first browsed this book , I was disappointed. It seemed like another book with too much introductory material and not enough substance. After reading the book in detail, I have radically changed my opinion. I now feel that this is probably the best introductory/intermediate level book on using Cisco routers available. About 25 % of the book is introductory material. While this is probably superfluous to most network administrators, it serves as the framework that the author uses to teach the beginning Cisco administrator how to connect to the router and how the Cisco command line works. It shows networking from a Cisco-centric viewpoint and the gory details of Cisco hardware needed for practical networking. The author then progresses to TCP/IP configuration, routing protocol configuration, legacy protocol support and WAN configuration. The final 40% of the book discusses practical network design and troubleshooting. One of the great strengths of this book is the line by line configuration examples and the detailed explanation of what each command/line accomplishes. There is quite a bit of information packed into this book. If you are new to Cisco routers or need material that is much more accessible than the Cisco documentation, then this book is for you. The only reason I gave this book a 9 instead of a 10 is that I would like to have seen much more information on routing protocols. It is still a fine book.

Summary: Would be five stars if ...
Comment: ... the publisher would be totally honest about the scope and depth of this book and alter the title to read "Cisco TCP/IP Routing Basic Reference".

When I was first dropped into the position of having to know routing, and knew nothing, I was lucky enough to begin with this book. One of the most concise and readable basic level introductions to networking and routing that I have ever seen. This book is a wonderful beginning level text for those of you who have never seen or worked with a Cisco router before but will be doing so shortly.

My one complaint is the use of the word "Professional" in the title. This text is nowhere near the technical level or depth of what I would consider required to be considered a professional in the field of networking, much less to be considered as a professional when it comes to working with Cisco equipment. But like I said, one of the best introductary level books I've come across.
