Summary: GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!
Comment: I found this book to be exactly what it says it is: essential! I consult it almost everytime that I write something to my penpal, or for my german class, or for myself. I especially like the different colors and typefaces (bold, italicized) to help make sure that you don't miss what the concept in that section is trying to get accross. Another great aspect is that the book doesn't seem to be satified with just one example, it gives you at least two, or three, sometimes even four examples of the way that this concept is implemented. I have many German grammar books, and I find this one to be the best of the collection. This book is a must have for any learner of German.

Summary: Look for something else
Comment: The jacket on this book promises that it is easy to use, with clear examples, yada, yada, yada. Don't be fooled. The authors warn you straight off that studying grammar is difficult, but they seem to have gone out of their way to make it more so. As a patent attorney, I am used to slogging through material that is charitably described as a "difficult read", but this is one of the toughest books to get through I have read in years. Although there are many examples in the book, a substantial portion are in German with no translations offered, hardly a help for those new to the language. The explanation of the "bracket" form of German clauses is about as confusing as I've ever seen (and it's really not that difficult once you see it in practice).

I understand that the study of grammar-particularly the grammar of a foreign language-is bound to be hard. It should not, however, be torture.
