Summary: Just entering Medical School
Comment: Harrison's is one of the leading authorities on internal medicine. Access to Harrison's is an ABSOLUTE MUST for any medical student! However, you might want to consider your options before sheeling out all of this money.
The first consideration is that your medical school library probably has access to the online version of Harrison's. You may even be able to access it from your home from your school library's website. this doesn't work that well for me, because I hate reading long articles online. I need to be able to make notes and highlight. You can print from the website, but it is a hassle.
The second, and I think best option, is to buy a used copy of Harrison's while in medical school, and then maybe get the current edition when you graduate. The basic information doesn't change that much from year to year. you can use an old copy of Harrison's to get the basic concepts down and then use other resources to get the most up-to-date info. I bought a copy that was 2 years old... and I am pretty happy with it.

Summary: Harrison's prinicple
Comment: In 1998 I taught a class in medical technique for medical assistants. I had a text to teach yourself medical terminology. I went to Ingrin Medical book store and reviewed several books. I loved Harrison's book and it came in quite handy as I was hired by the hospital to manage their health care. The book is very portable and needs to be revised often as medical advances and new terms come into being. It is very easy to understand, as my degree was to work with elderly in need of managed health care.

Summary: Required Reading.
Comment: Harrison's is the standard textbook for Internal Medicine and has been the standard for many years. It has done an admirable job of staying fresh, though I'm not sure the addition of an "alternative medicine" chapter belongs there any more than a chapter on atheism belongs in a new King James Bible, but whatever. The companion website is quite nice, though I have not figured out exactly how it will help me yet. The bottom line here is that if you are an Internist, you need Harrisons.
