Summary: Way Over Their Heads
Comment: I bought this book and distributed it to my students for the AP History course that I teach. Half of the students quit after the first chapter they were so bored of it and the rest of them read the book but didn't understand where it was going or what the point of it was. I just feel this book was not a good choice to be published and should not be used at all for anything.

Summary: Must reading for nascent historians
Comment: Gustavson's work is an excellent primer for freshmen struggling through Western Civ or even more experienced students of history in search of a deeper understanding of the historical forces that shape our world. Gustavson examines these forces in each chapter and provides historical examples that bring the ideas into focus. With considerable wit and a sophisticated mind, Gustavson created a work that will stand the test of time...a considerable achievement for a historian.
