Summary: An insightful story about an abusive relationship.
Comment: First of all, I have to say that this book is very good. It was a very insightful story about a boy, Nick, who abuses his girlfriend. I read this story in my English class, and everyday I've found myself anxious to get to class and find out what happens next.

The book starts off in the present, where Nick and his father are at court with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin, and her mother. Caitlin requests a restraining order, and the judge grants it. She also forces Nick to attend anger management classes and write 500 words a week in a journal about what happened.

From here, the book switches from past to present. In a chapter, you learn how life is for Nick after the trial. Ending each chapter is his journal. Nick's journal details what happened in the past with Caitlin.

This book deserves five stars because it's very true-to-life. It's told from Nick's point of view. It's insightful because of Nick's attitude. Nick's tone sounds very much like someone who abuses a girlfriend would. Alex Flinn, the author, worked with men like this, along with battered women and children. Another thing is this book makes you think. You wonder why one person did something, and you think, 'Oh, that was mean of that person,' and then when you read on, you find that they're justified. And this happens to a character more than once.

I recommend this book for anyone who's been in abusive relationships, or who just wants to read a good book.

Summary: Breathing Underwater
Comment: This was a very powerful book that all teenagers should read. It deals with real life situations and both male and female should understand what is happening in relationships. Nick has a great life except for his overbearing father. Caitlyn has made herself more acceptable to the "in" crowd by losing weight. Now they have found each other and it seems to be the perfect match. Then Nick starts feeling possessive of Caitlyn and reacts in very strange ways. Because she LOVES him, she puts up with very abusive behavior. He even hits her and she forgives him. After he attacks her the second time, he has to go to court. The story is about his rehabilitation and the flashbacks (telling the story) come in the form of a journal he has to write. I found it very moving and can see why so many young people are in dangerous relationships. Hopefully, many people can see themselves in this book and can get help before it is too late. I really liked Alex Flinn and would like to read more of her books.

Summary: A realistic view of teenage domestic violence
Comment: Without being "preachy," this book takes a serious look into the much-ignored abusive high-school relationship.
Nic is a popular, wealthy young man who lives with his inattentive and angry father.
He hooks up with the not-so-popular (but beautiful and vulnerable) Caitlin and the obsession begins.
Nic's constant jealousy and scrutiny of Caitlin ("Who are you trying to look so good for?" "Where were you?") leads her to believe she's not good enough to be with him. However, when he loses control and hits her, she presses charges and Nic is assigned court-order group therapy for abusers. In therapy the author introduces an interesting and believable cast of characters.
Four stars for the following reasons:
The story is well-written, but I felt there were a few times that Giles repeats the same situations without adding more depth to the issue.
There is some strong language, but I think the overall message is important enough that is should be read by students starting in 7th grade.
