Summary: An Australian Author Pushing All the Right Buttons
Comment: From its first mysterious beginning, right through to the momentous, but sudden, ending, this book is a cut above the rest of the YA fantasy out there. However Sabriel is a page-turner, no doubt about that.
The story begins with the heroine, Sabriel, in her last year at boarding school in a country, not unlike early 20th century England, called Ancelstierre. We find that she is no ordinary girl, but in fact the daughter of the Abhorsen, a necromancer of much importance from The Old Kingdom, located to the north of Ancelstierre.
The Old Kingdom is a perilous country, where two types of magic are ever at war and the dead don't always stay dead. It is the Abhorsen's task to rid the world of evil necromancers and lay the dead back to rest.
Sabriel finds her last year cut short when she receives a message from her father, saying he is in trouble, possibly caused by his old enemy Kerrigor. As a result, she sets out on a journey across the Wall to the land of her birth to find, or rescue, her father.
Along the way she gains the help of her father's cat Mogget and the mysterious Touchstone, in the race against time (and Kerrigor) to prevent the eventual destruction of the Old Kingdom as she knows it.
The technology of Ancelstierre and the magic of the Old Kingdom and what happens when they cross provide a new issue for fantasy, which is often very medieval.
This is a book which, though it sounds a little like a horror novel when being described, contains everything a good book, and a good fantasy book at that, should have, plus some very original ideas. There is danger, magic, romance and intrigue all to be found here. A strong heroine, who is potentially a wonderful role model and Garth Nix's brilliant storytelling and humour, combine to make this novel worth every cent, and maybe more...

Summary: A Dark Fantasy With Magic, Secrets, and Twists
Comment: As most reviewers may have already said, this book is amazing. It is chock-full of action and adventure with a surprising yet satisfying ending. Sabriel is the main charcter of the book. She is 18 years old and goes to school at Wyverley College, which is in another world. In this other world, the landscape is divided by a gigantic wall, known as (none other than) the Wall. The modern world, where Sabriel is growing up is called Ancelstierre. Ancelstierre is much like our own world. Meanwhile, beyond the wall, is the Old Kingdom, the place full of magic and unfortunately, the dead who crossed over. When Sabriel's father, who happens to be an Abhorsen (one who puts the dead to rest), the opposite of a necromancer (one who raises the dead)doesn't visit Sabriel at his usual time, things start to get fishy. Throughout the book, there are twists and turns in the plot and you get to meet fascinating characters called Mogget and Touchstone. I deeply recommend this book. Also read Lirael, the sequel to Sabriel!

Summary: Sabriel: One of the best heroines of all time
Comment: This excellent book focuses around its title character, Sabriel, a young woman, almost an adult. She has spent her life in boarding school in Ancelstierre where there is only magic near the border, while her father risked his life in The Old Kingdom, the place where magic is everywhere. Sabriel's father is the Abhorsen, the person who puts the dead raised by Necromancers back into death, a risky job, one that comes to a person through blood right. Now Sabriel's father is in trouble, and only she can save him using the power that lies within her blood. She must travel into the Old Kingdom, and most probably even death, using the 7 bells of the Abhorsen and a Charter Magic sword, given to her by her father now that she must save him, unravelling other mysteries as she goes. With the help of a dangerous free magic spirit, kept tame by the collar that binds him to Sabriel's family, and a young man Touchstone, who she saves from his wooden resting place, Sabriel must face all kinds of danger to save her father, the only parent she has ever known. But will she make it in time, or will it be too late to save her father? Sabriel is a brilliant book, a real page turner that leaves you running for the sequel when you've finished. Garth Nix writes a tale that excites, and surprises, and you find yourself falling into Sabriel's world with scenes so well described you can almost see them playing before your eyes. A great book for anyone with a love for tales of adventure, and anyone who loves a good heroine. This is a new book that I've added to my all time favorites.
