Summary: Excellent First Reader that Builds Confidence
Comment: This book is great for introducing reading to youngsters. There is a period when kids start to read when their frustration level is high because they don't know as many words on the page as they would like.
This book eases the entrance into book reading by use of rhyme and repeating phrases. All a child has to do is master the base word ("cat") and the many rhymes that are used are easy from that point.
My five year old pointed with great pride to the book after he had read it -- it has encouraged his efforts.

Comment: This book is so cute. My 5 year old just loved it as well as I enjoyed reading it with her. It is just right for the beginning reader. The story is longer than most beginning readers which allows the child to actually read the text as opposed to memorizing it.

Summary: Excellent First Book For Young Readers
Comment: Very clever wordplay and -- as many previous reviewers have noted -- young children will be able to memorize the rhymes and recite the book before they can actually read. Much to the delight of parents!
If your child likes this book, I would recommend "Down on the Funny Farm" by P.E.King as a follow-up. It was a natural transition for my three kids. The two books share a similar playfulness and humor, although I think "Down on the Funny Farm" has a little more staying power with the children. My youngest has been reading "Funny Farm" for over a year now and she still counts it as one of her favorites. Enjoy!
