Summary: The Grouchy Ladybug is a great children's book
Comment: I loved this book! I have read many Eric Carle books, and they all have great artwork and insightful issues that children deal with every day. The Grouchy Ladybug is no different. The circular story shows that many times you end up back where you started, especially if you're negative and uncaring. It also shows our children that bullying and violence will get you nowhere and that politeness, caring and sharing are the way to get what you want out of life. The repetition is great for children learning word patterns and makes it easier to follow for younger children. Eric Carle uses subtlety and creativity to deal with children's issues in a fun, colorful and intersting way.

Summary: A great book to read when you're feeling grouchy
Comment: Carle's story explores the concepts of time, size and manners through the exploits of one very grouchy ladybug. When it refuses to share aphids with another ladybug, the grouchy insect flies off to pick a fight an hour with a succession of ever-larger animals. Kids will love the way the tension seems to build in the story. Will the ladybug get its comeuppance? Or will it learn to mind its manners? (If you don't remember, you'll just have to read it yourself to find out!)
Carle employs his almost trademarked tissue paper and tempera collages to great effect here as he renders more than a dozen different animals. He includes a clock face at the top of each page, to help kids track the passing of time. A good book to read when you or your little one is in a grouchy mood.
This is one of those classic picture books that doesn't lose anything in the translation to board book. If anything, it is improved since the die-cut pages hold up a lot better when they are made of thick board.

Summary: This book is crap
Comment: Eric Carle has done better. Read the "Very Quiet Cricket". This book is extremely repetitive and isn't really even a story so much as an excuse for the mediocre illustrations and a kind of irritating gimmick of having differently sized pages. These pages are have for my son to turn also.
I love reading real children's stories to my kids, and I don't mind some repetition (e.g., "Guess how much I love you" and "Are you my Mother?" are great...) But the ladybug keeps saying the same thing over and over and over. Yeah, I've hid the book from my kids and they don't miss it.
