Summary: A very loving and touching book; could be a bit better!
Comment: Rostkowski combines heroism, war, and love in this chapter book for children. The story is almost always set in a hospital, where Annie Metcalf, the main character, learns to confront Andrew, a bitter young veteran whos face yielded terror in many people. Annie soon opens her heart to this man, and yet must face her mother, who shows immense prejudice to Andrew. This book was repetitious, though. There was actually no real "movement" of the plot

Summary: After the Dancing Days
Comment: After the Dancing Days is a very good book. It is about a young thirteen year old girl named Annie who is going to the train station to meet her father, who she has not seen ever since he went to serve as a doctor at World War I. While at the train station she saw many of the young men who fought in the war. Many of them were badly hurt with broken legs, arms, or with deformed faces and burned bodies. Annie saw a young man pass by her on a stretcher with his face deformed and that face just stuck with her through many days of summer. Annie's father worked at a hospital that took care of the men from the war that were badly wounded. Her father and grandfather would talk about the hospital to Annie and her grandfather would also talk to her about Timothy, who stayed at St. John's hospital. Annie's grandfather read to Timothy since he was blind. Annie wanted to go to St. John's but was sacred of how the men would look. Annie finally decided to go and there she met Andrew, who was badly burned. Annie became very good friends with him and every day she would go visit him even though her mother was against it. While spending time at St. John's Annie finds out about her uncle Paul's death and how he actually died while in battle.
I really liked this book especially since it all seemed to be a story about events that would actually happen in real life. The obstacles that Annie went through were obstacles that other young teens would probably go through also. I really enjoyed this book also because it was easy to understand. What I mean is that the text is easy to read unlike other books where you have to stop and reread something that you can't understand. I believe that I would disagree with whom ever says this book is boring because it's not especially with all the suspense on wanting to find out about how Paul died or to find out how Annie's mom will react to Annie disobeying her or if Annie's grandfather will be fine.
I would recommend this book especially to teens all over the world of any kind of race. I advise teens to read this book because it talks about issues that teens go through and maybe it can help solve someone's problem. This is also a good book to recommend to teens because it teaches you about friendship and how precious a friendship can be and that no one should ever come between a friendship.

Summary: My opinion on After the Dancing Days
Comment: After the Dancing Days is about a girl who is dealing with the death of her uncle, the war, and her father being away helping the doctors at war. When her father finally arrives, her life starts to change. She cannot stop thinking about all of the wounded soldiers. As the weeks go by she learns to manage her thoughts and keep up with her ever-changing life.

I loved After the dancing Days. It was very interesting to see a girl about my age going through so much and handling it so well. It is also very inspiring to me because of the fact that she is so strong spiritually and emotionally.

The war brought a great deal of depression to the family, not to mention the rest of the country. When everything starts to get worse, she loses a good friend who helped her through the whole time. I thought the book was really good and great for anyone who likes to read.
