Summary: A Masterpiece
Comment: I am currently reading this book for the third time, and everytime it is as fresh as new. The book is a 321 page poetry, enchanting, captivating and mesmerizing, every page with a distinct kind of life dissolved into it. Rahel is definitely an image of the author herself, I started to believe. The story is about a small incident on a rainy night, but seen from past, present and future, spread over years. Like a spider spinning a web, the story too converges to the single incident and why the incident is so important. Roy has invented her own language, her own flow, with characters like Terror, Fear, Happiness etc., all blended into a sad stream of events with very little happiness, redefining love, whom to be loved and how much. I would recommend readers to read this book atleast twice to get the inner beauty of this Booker winning novel. Hats off to Arundhati Roy.

Summary: Lyrical prose, painful reality...
Comment: This unique tale of childhood in India is written in the lyrical prose of an artist, whose vivid childhood scenes set the stage for a lifetime of heartbreak. The child's perception is beautifully wrought from the experience of Rahel, two-egg twin of her brother, Estha. Living on the outside edge of family acceptance, the children attempt to divine a cohesive explanation for the circumstances of their young lives and that of their mother, Ammu.
Roy writes compelling dialogue, skillfully rendering the innocence of childish perception, as the child assumes responsibility for the actions of mature family members. And when Ammu is drawn to a man of lower caste, the price for both the lovers and the twins is preordained. The most simple acts have stunning repercusions: the loss and deprivation of a sibling reaches across a lifetime.
This story reads like a fable, much like C.S. Godshalk"s KALIMANTAAN, which I drifted through in much the same way, not seeking explanation or definition. I became apprehensive towards the end, anticipating the loss of smoke and mirrors, but in a graceful coup, Roy gathers the ends of her tapestry into the language of love. In her hands, a mother and her two children learn that everything in your life can change forever in an instant. But we are left with the taste of love, after all, the sweetest and most generous gift.

Summary: An amazingly wise and talented artist.
Comment: This is a dazzlingly beautiful book, with terror and pain and love and charm, but with an incredible amount of humanity and vision. Roy is both a brilliant thinker and wonderful artist. Her craft is keen. The story so amazingly brings together the wonder of youth with the realities of race, class, and gender. The book is so much more than the sum of its part. Her charactes will live in me for a long time. She is a spectacular voice of our time. The reading this novel was a once in a life time experience I want to repeat!
