Summary: Slightly verbose & devoid of nuance
Comment: "God for Us" was a fad while I was a graduate student. Too bad. It is not well written. Nor is LaCugna entirely honest with her readers. Okay, so she is an adoptionist in her Christology and a modalist in her understanding of the Trinity. And she deviates from Catholic tradition on many other important points.
That's not the essential point. What also matters is clarity and and fairness and integrity. This is where LaCugna really falls short. Go ahead and advance your own ideas and opinions, but be sure to engage other views fairly and accurately and honestly, especially when you pretend to represent the Catholic tradition.
In the mean time, if you want good Trinitarian theology, go to Rahner, Lebreton, de Margerie, or Hill. And beware of older theologians, stuck in a late-1960's time-warp, who perpetuate their own spiritual adolescent crises by assigning books like this to keep alive the illusion that the Catholic Church's teachings are still up for grabs.

Summary: Best book on Trinity
Comment: The Trinity is one of the most challenging and most neglected doctrines in the Church. Lacugna makes learning about the doctrine A VERY REWARDING EXPERIENCE.
She summarizes the development of the doctrine from the first century to today. Her intent, however, is to argue that the doctrine of the Trinity is not an explanation of a God who is somewhere "out there" in eternity, but rather an explanation of the community of a God who is present and inviting us into community. She supports her position well, drawing from the ancients and contemporary Orthodox and Catholic theologians.
The subject matter of the book is very challenging. It will take most people awhile to get through the material. But each page is a pearl and the reward for reading it is great.
I encourage anybody with an interest in the doctrine of the Trinity to prioritize reading this book.

Summary: Wow!
Comment: This book is a tour de force of Trinitarian thought. LaCugna masterfully explains and evaluates historical and contemporary thought on the Trinity. She represents the early church fathers, Catholic, Orthodox, feminist and liberation theology with aplomb. Her thesis, that the Trinity is not "God out there" but "God with us" is wonderfully and successfully explained. (The only thing lacking is inclusion of current Protestant thought on the Trinity, but they don't have much to offer, so it's good she didn't bother.) I can't say enough good things about this book. It is a challenging read, but that just makes it more rewarding.
