Do you like funny books? Funky plots? Then you will probably love
Surviving the Applewhites! In this story, great for older or younger
kids, you'll meet Jake Semple, the "bad kid from the city", who comes to
stay at Wits End, a furniture factory, gallery, studio, goat compound,
Creative Academy, as well as the home of the most chaotic, artistic and
forgetful family you'll ever meet, the Applewhites. The Applewhites
started their home school after one of their daughters, Cordeila, was
told in her science class that she could not paint a zebra black and
purple. Her dad, Randolph, said that real science requires creativity
and individuality, and pulled all his kids out of school the next day.
So that's how the Creative Academy started, a place where pretty much
each kid runs their own curriculum, doing math online, but otherwise
pursuing their talents and such. E.D., one of the younger Applewhites,
about Jake's age, is, well, different from the rest of her family. She
is less artistic, and likes being organized, and was not at all eager
about having Jake come to stay with them. Her project, now only
partially her's, since Jake came along, is a butterfly project,
photographing and cataloging every butterfly in the state. She feels
like it's being taken away from her when Jake finds her long hunted
Spangled Fitlery, which seems to only add to her troubles. Randolph is
directing a musical in town, the Sound of Music and he finds Jake a role
in it! Then the other people working at the theater all quit, angry
their own children weren't picked for the cast, and the Applewhites end
up taking the jobs. But, that's not all. Soon the shows been canceled,
and that's when the Applewhites take matters into their own hands...
The main characters in this book were:
Jake Semple: a punk, who smokes and swears and wears his hair in red
spikes. He supposedly got kicked out of every other school in Rhode
Island, and burned his last school down. His parents are in jail for
growing marijuana in their basement.
The Applewhites:
Sybil: the mother, a writer, supposedly working on the "Great American
Novel".
Randolph: the father, and a director with a temper.
Archie: the uncle, who makes, strange, unique furniture.
Lucille: the aunt, who is a poet and meditates a lot.
Zedediah: the grandfather, a rather weird character, easily amused.
Hal: a sculptor who lives in his room.
Cordeila: a dancer, and choreographer.
E.D. : short for Edith Wharton, a smart, stuffy sort of girl, wanting
things predictable and in order.
Destiny: a small, loud, mischievous boy who asks lots of questions.
Winston: the stubborn, old doggy.
I thought that this was an excellent book. It had a cute story, with
twists and turns, humor, and it really made it's points. I think that
some of the elements were friendship, stereotypes, and how even the
worst sorts of problems can have a good side. I think that it's a
wonderful book, a wacky realistic fiction. It has appropriate
language(despite what you may think) and is a fairly easy read. I
recommend it to all.

Summary: Surviving the Applewhites
Comment: Surviving The Applewhites is a fiction novel by Stephani S. Tolan, I would recommend this book to people who like to ready about adventure, becuase this book takes you from the family that goes thier seperate ways to the family who works together and accomplishs one big important thing.
Jake Semple was sent to the last school possible, The Creative Accademy. The rumor was he burnt down his old school. when he gets to Wits End E.D. doesn't like the fact that Jake is comming to live with her and her family. jake says "yeah well i don't intend to be here long anyway." Good E.D. thought "Where do you intend to go?" "Rhode island." "If you go back they're going to send you to juvenile hall. they must have some kind of school there. you'd probably like it better than this one." The Applewhites are big on setting your own path, and art. E.D. has to take care of Jake at first until he gets used to the way things are there. Randolf Applewhite and director gets to direct The Sound of Music. He casts Jake as Rolf. As the story goes on Jake becomes more and more of a good kid. He starts to relize that he doesn't want to be bad anymore. When jake and Randolf go to rehersals, One of the cast members falls off the stage and breaks her arm. So Randolf has to cast his son Destiny, a hyper little boy, with a big imagination, as Gretle, but changes Gretle to be Hans the little boy obsessed over hats. Mrs. Montrose cancels the show because Randolf didn't choose her daughter for the Gretle part, so The Applewhites had to think of something fast, E.D. thought they could have the show in thier barn, so the whole Applewhite family gets together to build the stage and get it ready for the show. On the opening night, the show is going good until they run into somebad wheather and all the lights go out. E.D. had to think of something, What would you do? read the book and find out!

Summary: APPLEWHITES REVIEW
Comment: SURVIVING THE APPLEWHITES IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. THE WEIRDNESS OF THE APPLEWHITES AND JAKES PUNK ATTITUDE REALLY MAKE THIS A SPECTACULAR BOOK. THIS BOOK WOULD PROBABLY ENTERTAIN KIDS IN 6TH TO TO 8TH GRADE THE MOST BUT ADULTS WOULD GET KICK OUT OF IT BECAUSE OF ITS TINY SINCE OF HUMOR. AS A 7TRH GRADER I READ THIS BOOK IN ABOUT 2 WEEKS READING WHENEVER I HAD TIME SO THIS IS A QUICK BUT INTERESTING BOOK. BUT DON'T LET ME SPOIL EVERYTHING FOR YOU , READ IT AND ENJOY FOR YOURSELF!
