Comment: I've been a UNION GUY for 30 years and some of the reviews of this book are sooo written by UNION DOPES I have to laugh!
Im not a Firefighter but have read the book and think it is FANTASTIC!What guy will fight and get you Bunker Gear and a Cancer Bill than turn around and get ya more work(EMT)then go to work for the CITY with an eye on you guys all the time with less and less fires to respond to????? Im no firefighter but I am a UNION guy and you guys are way out of line here! Von Essen did a GREAT job for YOU and THE CITY OF NEW YORK.....Joey

Summary: One Man 343 Deaths
Comment: How does a man with 30 + years on the job and countless friends lost in the tragedy of 9-11 even have the composure to tell us his story? God bless Tom Von Essen and the Heros of 9-11....
Ganci,Downey,Judge,Feehan and all the rest of the BRAVEST lost that day. What hurts is the SORRY attempt by guys with far less time trying to say bad things about Von Essen. Here is a guy who paid his dues (in the BRONX when the city was burning)went on to protect his men with Bunker Gear as President and get more work for them when the city was looking to cut back.This book was a great read for me and I recommend it to anyone who likes true no nonsense reading and true factual happenings in New York after the Sept.11 attacks

Comment: Viewed from the other side of the country, STRONG OF HEART by Commissioner Thomas Von Essen is an engaging insight into the life & times of the FDNY & the cataclysm of 9/11.
For those of us outside the furor which apparently is raging over Von Essen's memoirs, STRONG OF HEART is a worthy read of one man's memories rich with inside details of the way it was at Ground Zero from someone in the thick of it. From helicopter rides to the hundreds of wakes; from telling hundreds of bereaved families; from making errors in identification; from rubbing shoulders with rescuers, presidents, mayors & journalists, from one of the few survivors whose life work has been transformed by that dreadful day.
Complete with some profound photos.
