Summary: A Nightmare in Stepford...
Comment: "The Stepford Wives" has long been part of the American vocabulary, courtesy of the successful 1975 film. Most folks reading this review has either seen the film or at least has a good idea on what it is about. So is it worth bothering chasing down the novel (actually, a novella) now that it is out of print (in the USA)? The answer is yes, most definitely.
For those who aren't familiar with the story, it is a gothic fable about a fictitious New England town where all the married women are, or quickly turn into the sort of wife many men would dream of: buxom, cheerful, and submissive in every way. But this utopia/hell is challenged by the arrival of a new family where the Mrs. seems to sense something is wrong ... and feels, with justification, she is in danger.
The film does follow the book rather nicely, although the ending is a bit different. Fans of the movie will not be disappointed however.
Bottom line: a short, nightmarish fable of 1970s Americana. No, it is not very believable. But it is well-written and thought-provoking. Recommended.

Summary: a strange story
Comment: I have read the book "The Stepford Wives" in English at school. We had to read a few pages every week. At the beginning of the book, I thought: What a nonsense!" When I didn't have to read more, I stopped reading. But I did continue and I must say now I changed my opinion. After the first ten or twenty pages the story became very thrilling.
The story is simple. Joanna Eberhart, including her husband and her two children move from a big city to Stepford, a little rural town. The women there are very strange and they are only interested in housework. But Joanna finds a friend, called Bobby, who is not interested in housework either. But then, Bobby has a second honeymoon with her husband, and when she returns she has changed like the other housewives, too. What happened?

Summary: Somewhat thrilling, but a little dull
Comment: Stepford Wives started out a little slow, and I was hoping for it to pick up pace, but I didn't all that much. It was thrilling in the sense that you did wonder what was going to happen next, but it wasn't one that you were just dying to know the ending to. It's about a family who moves to Stepford and discovers that all the wives in this town are slaves to their husbands, constantly doing nothing but housework and cooking. The strange thing is that they don't seem to be bothered by it. What's even more odd is that all the husbands in the town meet at the Men's Association and nobody knows why. Joanna Eberhart (the main character) does some research on the president of the association and finds out some horrifying information that just might explain why all the wives are the way that they are. Can she save herself before she becomes one of them? You'll have to read to find out.
