Summary: Between the Bullet and the Lie;American Volenteers in the Sp
Comment: This book is very well documented and researched and is written in a clear and humorous style. Follow the adventures of well meaning but naive American's as they get killed or at best just hung out to dry by pretty much every one involved: Communists, Socialists, Republicans, the Spanish, the French not to mention their own government. Those lucky enough to survive the war often had to find their own way home without any money or help and often without their pasports which were conficated early on and then sold with out their consent or knowledge. Meet celebrities like Hemmingway and Errol Flynn and find out just how much they actually could drink in one sitting. Follow George Orwell and see what heroism and sacrifice really cost. Over all if you have any interest in this absurdist civil war or are curious about why there ever even was a Lincoln Brigade this is definatly the book for you. Cecil Eby is an inteligent, candid and amusing writer. Who as an acidemic has done his home work and as an author is able to inform and at the same time entertain. This book is written with passion and flair. All in all a great read.
