Summary: Hmmmm.......
Comment: McFedries does an effective job of holding the neophyte's hand and leading them through the basic's of HTML and web page construction. The book is well thought out, well organized, and McFedrie's relaxed down to earth writing style makes an easy and personable read. This latter point is both an asset and a liability, however, as I at times found myself wishing he would cut to the chase and be a bit more concise. Some of the topics, such as adding multimedia and elements of style are treated very superficially. But perhaps McFedries views them beyond scope of his book and does this intentionally, for he does provide links to sites where such info abounds.
In summary, the book is excellent as a basic introduction for an absolute beginner without much computer savvy (9 - 10), but the intermediate user will find themselves wanting a bit more depth (5 - 6). At least I did

Summary: Gadzillion Stars for this one
Comment: If ever a technical book deserved a gadzillion stars, this one did. It really does deliver what it promises...
In his introduction, Paul McFedries says that he will "...teach you how to create beautiful web pages in no time flat ...it's my goal in this book to show you that it's really quite simple and that anyone can build a page with their bare hands." He succeeds admirably! The book set up is simple and easy to follow and, as McFedries promises, you can follow through the steps just as they are organized in the book and, in no time, start shaping together your own web pages.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page doesn't assume you have any previous knowledge with Web page production (good job too!), and this means that you really do start from scratch, slowly building your HTLM knowledge. All information is presented in short, easy-to-digest chunks and the referencing is clear an precise.
As a bonus, the accompanying CD has notes and examples on all the chapters and completes the perfect manual for beginners on the Web. WELL DONE Paul McFedries.

Summary: Well-written, but out-of-date
Comment: This book is very well-organized. The instructions and tips concerning HTML coding are written in simple language and are very easy to follow. Unfortunately, many of the tags which McFedries uses in his examples are deprecated. Some browsers compensate for poor, out-of-date coding but others don't. If you use this book as your reference source for HTML coding while designing a complex website, you may end up with a website that looks beautiful when viewed in Netscape (which compensates for some coding errors) but which is unreadable when viewed in MSIE. If this book weren't so out of date, I would have rated it a 4. There's no question that McFedries knows how to teach coding and knows how to write well. I only hope that he writes an updated version.
