Summary: Will take your game to the next level.
Comment: I'm not a real big fan of the "Idiot" concept because most of the books in the Idiot genre I have read are written for an audience of idiots!

But this book does a pretty good job of just teaching you about chess, without all of the non-sensical humor other Idiot books have, which I guess is supposed to make you fell less intimidated by the subject matter.

At any rate, this book will take your game to the next level. If you are like me and are only vaguely familiar with the rudiments of chess and not the concept of playing chess "strategically" this book will definately remedy that.

I love the way the authors change the illustrations to reflect the move(s) they are instructing you in. This book is very, very easy to read, and the concepts are easy to master. Because of this book I feel very comfortable about going to a more intermediate-level book to further enhance my game.

Summary: Accesible, Understandible Introduction to Chess
Comment: My wife has been pressing me to teach chess to my five year old. The only problem is, I don't play it myself. I know the pieces and rules and I played some speed chess in college, but I had not played a game in 20 years and could not beat my Palm Pilot freeware even at level 1.

I definitely needed some help. This book was well reviewed in a variety of places, so I gave it a shot despite my antipathy to the idiot/dummy guidebook genre. I am very glad I did. This is an excellent book on chess, and I recommend it highly.

Writing a good "how to" for a strategy game is much harder than it looks. If the book is pitched too low, a reader will quickly lose interest. If the book is pitched to high, a reader will quickly pitch the book. It has to be challenging enough to engage the reader, but not so challenging as to make the reader throw up his hands.

This book is admirable on many levels. The chapters progress in an orderly way, and build upon each other. The concepts, which seem so mysterious to the uninitiated, are laid out thoroughly and understandably. The illustrations, asides, historical notes, and pointers are well placed and enjoyable. The exercises are hard (for this novice, anyway) but mostly doable -- and when I was stumped, I referred to the good explanations in the solution endnotes to figure out where I went wrong. I am now consistently beating the palm pilot at a higher level (I won't say how high --I still have room to grow) and feel I have learned enough to play with my five year old.

I may even be able to beat her.

Summary: Poor format destroys all good content
Comment: I am currently working through the electronic version of this book. Don't buy it! The content is great, however the formatting is so confusing that you'll be frustrated and won't get it. The diagrams are poorly colored so it is often difficult to see the pieces on the boards and they are also too far from the pages on which they are described. For example, I just clicked 4 pages to see the first diagram of a 5 move example. The other five moves are described in the in between pages so I am having to click forward and back to follow the teaching. The same goes for the exercises at the end of each chapter. My suggestion, if you want to use this book, buy the printed edition! The only reason I give two stars here is that I think the content is worth reading.
