Summary: Language Can Be Fun.
Comment: This is an impressive work, and a must have for anyone serious
about lexical semantics. The authors clearly have extensive
practical and theoretical experience in lexical semantics.

But beyond their obvious expertise in the field, they are able
to present numerous original and thought provoking examples
that are at the same time informative as well as entertaining.

These are real world people writing in a style that makes
learning fun.

Summary: Getting to Grips with Lexical Semantics
Comment: I was very impressed by this book, especially because truly good books on lexical semantics are few and far between. The authors present their own work in the context of other lexical semantic theories, which they summarize in the opening chapters. They describe an interface between syntax and semantics that is grounded in semantic structure, rather than syntax. Their vision of the lexicon is very well argued, and shows that they have worked extensively in the area. I found the idea of predicate schemas particularly convincing as a way of representing lexical regularities. The book is extensively exemplified. An added treat is the originality of the examples, which are refreshing since they come from a wide variety of semantic areas (and not the ones everyone always uses). In my opinion, this book is a must for everyone that is seriously interested in lexical semantics.
