Summary: The Knitter's Bible
Comment: This book is a good reference for when you are working on a pattern and come across something you don't know how to do. It's well-organized (by technique) and covers the basics and just about any knitting technique you can think of--including info on blocking and an introduction to designing knitwear--and even stuff you might not think of, like adding linings to knitted garments. Includes step-by-step photos and illustrations of each technique. The photos are laid out so that everything you need to know for one technique is on the same page.
Also includes a glossary of knitting terminology and abbreviations used in patterns, which is a big help for the beginner. Includes info on tons of design elements: how to make different types of pockets and button holes; knitting with beads and sequins; embroidery; hems; shaping for different types of sleeves; making different types of collars; plus making pleats, tucks, gathers, ruching, and flares, and putting in waistbands and zippers.
Both Vogue Knitting and Knitting for Dummies are good references. The Dummies book probably is a better book to learn from (more explicit, and cheaper, too), while Vogue Knitting seems to cover a wider variety of techniques and has more info to help the knitter who wants to start designing his/her own knitwear.

Summary: Excellent for beginners as well as for reference
Comment: This book should be renamed " textbook of knitting" It's got everything you would want to know about knitting. There's "recipies" for cables along with pictures, there's explanations on mosaic, fair isle and other kinds of pattern and color knitting. Everything is explained beautifully and the diagrams are well done. The project chapter is great, it explains how to take measurements, design and make just about any kind of sweater you'd like. It explains circular and double point knitting as well. They didn't have hat or glove patterns, but who cares, you can find books about those anywhere. This one is strictly educational and inspiring!

Summary: Belongs in all knitters' libraries!
Comment: This updated version is a wonderful reference book for any knitter's library. I've been knitting for over 40 years and am very sorry this wasn't around when I began.
Along with a short history of knitting and the usual list of supplies and basic instructions, this book includes a great 2-page questionnaire called the Vogue Knitting Worksheet. Lots of blanks for you to fill in for whatever project you care to design. (Yes, design!) Pages of suggested sizes if you're planning a gift and don't have the measurements handy; LOTS of instructions for techniques such as attaching a hem, sleeves to armholes, different collars, finishing techniques, plackets, buttonholes, blocking rules and a large section devoted to making the stitches, charting them, and reading charts, six knitting patterns (not for beginners), and a wonderful section on correcting errors. I learned a lot from this book. It's a good read as well as a pick-it-up-when-you-have-a-question book. Well worth the money! Amazon better get more in stock, soon, for everyone needs a copy of this lovely book.
