Summary: Hot stuff if you like Fortean mysteries and spookiness
Comment: This is a great book, because it brings Fortean themes and general spooky fireside tales together with serious investigations and cryptozoology. Indeed, Coleman has given us a peek at what can happen when cryptozoology gets stranger than usual. He first provides a good introduction to Mothman, the red-eyed flying entity reportedly seen in rural America and now the subject of a major motion picture. Coleman also pays fiting tribute to infamous Mothman investigator John Keel and his explainations for unexpalined phenomena. Finally, Coleman takes time to offer some of his own ideas and the ideas of his fellow researches. He neatly ties up loose ends by offer the reader folk tales and myths relating to many of the creatures documented in the book's pages.
Besides Mothman, Coleman yields an impressive amount of information concerning Thunderbirds and other winged creatures that people claim to encounter in the modern world. And if that wasn't enough for you hard-core monster buff: Coleman also discusses various other alleged unknowns. These inlcude sightings of reptoids, goat suckers, black dogs, the Flatwoods Monster, and even a three-toed beast lurking in New Orleans.
Coleman's cryptozoological hypothesis about what may be behind some creature sightings are most interesting. If you liked Coleman's, Mysterious America, you will love this book.

Summary: Coleman Examines Mothman
Comment: The premise of the Mothman movie--that sightings of a winged creature in Point Pleasant, Virginia in the 60s led to a series of weird events there, reaching a crescendo with a fatal bridge collapse in the area--is but one entry in this broader examination of the Mothman phenomenon. It includes a chart of 26 "most responsible" other Mothman sightings supplied by Mothman Prophecies author John Keel, as well as Loren Coleman's look at similar critters in history, like the Flatwoods Monster of 1952 and various thunderbirds and lizard men. A consummate Fortean, Coleman notes "Today, to scrutinize the world the way Fort did is rather common, as questioning authority, critically looking at experts and governments, is in vogue." Mothman and Other Curious Encounters is not just a catalog of weird creature sightings, like The Mothman Prophecies itself, it helps readers orient themselves to a more critical way of regarding the world.

Summary: Don't believe reviewers or
Comment: This book owes nothing to other books and it was written before the movie came out. Read it yourself to see.
It has been updated in a third edition after new events happened in Point Pleasant. This all really does make this book unique among those few available on Mothman.
This book is full of new material that the eyewitnesses shared with only this author. But buy them all.
