Summary: Poorly laid out and dull reading
Comment: I bought this book some time ago when Director 8.5 first came out, so there wasn't a large selection of books to pick from. And because it was a new book there weren't any customer reviews on it, so I threw caution to the wind and ordered it. Well...what can I say except it'll wind up gathering dust on your shelf like mine. I can't see how so many talented writers made such a boring book. It's definitely not for beginners, and even if you were intermediate to advanced, you wouldn't want to drudge through this thing. Whoever was in charge of the layout of this book should never work in publishing again.
It was a real chore trying to read it. Every time I picked it up I wound up putting it back down almost instantly. What this book desperately needed was a good tutorial (at the beginning of the book). They should've put in a tutorial that you could've worked through, one with plenty of illustrations. Also, either include a CD with some of the projects and tutorial or at least a Web site to download them. And stick to the ol' KISS--Keep It Simple Stupid.

Summary: This book is a quick hack....Disappointing
Comment: ... The book was poorly written, not enough creenshots. I suspect that it was hacked very quickly to hit the shelves in time as it is the only book on the 8.5 version (at the time).
I give it a 2 stars because is still helps you getting started with director. I was in hurry so I had to buy this book. If you have time, look for something else !

Summary: Disappointing
Comment: Disappointing, right from the beginning. I have to learn Director for work and they bought me some books. Luckily I have some other ones, because this is a poor value. I come from a background where I am an intermediate Flash user now, and have done a little bit of programming. I'm not a total beginner. I've found the wording very casual, splattered with bad jokes. I can appreciate humour, but the jokes within weren't funny. Maybe I have been in a bad mood because the book hasn't been helping me learn.
The examples were somewhat cryptic and there aren't enough screenshots. The format of the book is to give you some information and then follow the tutorial. Unfortunately, I don't think it's written clearly enough, and some important information is missing, especially in the early chapters.
In addition, they don't supply a cd with the book, but you have to download the tutorial files from their website. Fine for me. I have a T1 connection at work. Good luck for all you with a 56k modem etc. It's an annoyance.
Basically, the book isn't a very good value. I don't have the opportunity to actually flip through the book before hand, working in Japan right now. I can only decide to get work to purchase books based on reviews and what other people thought of the book. If I would have seen this book and leafed through it in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it. It is my hope that I will have a better experience with Director 8 Demystified and the Director 8 and Lingo Bible. Maybe others had a better experience with this book, but I suggest spending your money elsewhere.
