Summary: The author reviews his book.
Comment: The U.S. divided the Viet-Nam War into six campaigns. I was there for five of them between 1965 and 1969, as a Combat Photographer/Photojournalist. Since I write about what I know best, Challenge The Death Angel is more truth than fiction. Learn about the CIA's secret covert Viet-Nam War-Snipers! Assassins! This is the story of Angus Thurston, who grew up in a cotton mill village in South Carolina. He graduated high school in 1967, with the Viet-Nam draft breathing down his neck. To avoid being drafted into the Army, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Right out of Parris Island recruit training, Angus is hustled off to Viet-Nam, where he is secretly enlisted into the CIA as a sniper-an assassin. From here it is all non-stop action. For 270 pages! You will see Angus fight with his conscience. and the subtle changes in Angus' character and personality as he "matures" in his role as sniper.Angus' partner is unlike anyone you have ever met-a Viet-Nam veteran of two tours and into his third, all in the role of "sniper." He is known only as Cody. At times his presence overpowers Angus in the protagonist role. His fatigues are worn to the point of fraying, and his left boot sole is held in place with duct tape, and his long hair is kept in place by a camouflaged head band. Even Viet-Nam veterans are shocked when they learn that the CIA's Phoenix Program was responsible for more than 20,000 assassinations of civilians, VC suspects, and North and South Vietnamese military personnel. There are thousands of other kills that the CIA denies having any part in, and are classified as illegal murders. This implies that there must have been a legal murder classification, if we can believe that. I hope you will enjoy reading Challenge The Death Angel as much as I enjoyed writing it for you.
