Summary: "Guide" a Great Starting Place for Classical Rhetoric
Comment: Rollinson and Geckle's "Guide" is an excellent one volume source for students interested in classical rhetoric, rhetorical history, or the history of speech, law, politics, or education. Ancient rhetoric provided the foundation for all these pursuits through the Rennaisence, and Rollins and Geckle offer information on the important rhetorical theorists from the 5th century BCE to the 5th century CE, including summaries of each work by the authors listed and the titles of texts in print by these authors, in the original and translation, when available. A brief bibliography and index help. One drawback is the absense of most speeches from the period. While they include the speeches of Gorgias and Isocrates, other orators are not included: Demosthenes, Lysias, Isaeus, Andocides, Aeschines, etc. When they say rhetoric, they mean rhetorical theory, not practice.
