Summary: Carolina bays are nature's great mystery
Comment: Carolina bays are the greatest natural mystery of the eastern United States and have been the subject of much conjecture about how they were formed. Ross' "Carolina bays" gives the reader a succinct review and description of Carolina bays and a concise review of the many theories of origin. As a student of the natural landscape and nature, I have found this little book to be invaluable in enhancing my knowledge of Carolina bays. It is especially good to have under one cover a listing of all known publications dealing with Carolina bays and a good description of how each publication addresses a Carolina bay issue, whether it is about their origin, their cultural geography, their plant life, their soils, their vegetation, etc. Every person studying ecology, environment, and/or geomorphology of the southeastern United States should gain access to this invaluable research tool. I strongly recommend it for all University libraries and for private libraries of earth scientists in the above disciplines.
