Summary: Must-have for any new falconer
Comment: This was one of the first falconry books I read. It is simple and down-to-earth. At first glance it seemed a little TOO basic--no glossy photos, no complicated equipment patterns. It is simply a step-by-step guide to training your first hawk. Oakes never condescends to the reader while still breaking down the process--of training a wild-caught hawk--into easy-to understand parts. He also never loses sight of the big picture. The falconer is doing more than killing rabbits--he is a partner to his hawk. This is both privilege and responsibility.

Summary: A would-be Falconer's best written resource
Comment: This is probably the most down-to-Earth book I have ever read. This book is not for those who think of Falconry only as a Sport of Kings - for wealthy, bored people. It was the Sport of Kings and now is so much more. This book was written for apprentices, who willingly and lovingly embrace all the ups and downs of this sport. This book was written with Environmentalism and Conservation deeply in mind. Mr. Oakes speaks from experiences, many painful - many wonderful, and insists on teaching ethics, Ethics, and more ETHICS! I cannot imagine anyone truely dedicated to becoming a Falconer ignoring the wealth of information Mr. Oakes provides. His thoughts and guidence will definitely keep the apprentice from making the most common mistakes. Wonderful! Wonderful
