Summary: A short review by a Palauan and History/Political Sci major
Comment: Resisting the Serpent is a relatively short (211 pages) and highly readable work on Palau's struggle for self-determination. It took me two reading sessions to finish it. I gave a rating of "10" primarily because not a lot has been written on Palau's history, so anyone especially interested in that subject should read not only this work but also any other works available. Other recent works which should definitely be read in conjuction with Resisting the Serpent are those by Sue Rabitt Roff and Arnold H. Leibowitz. The latter author is important since he notes that Resisting the Serpent, and Roff's work as well are at least a bit biased given that the authors are advocates of peace, and anti-nuclear agendas. Regardless, Resisting the Serpent provides one angle which should be read and compared with other works. Also, it is highly readable and provides a background which will help the reader become familiar with the story. Again, it is advisable to keep in mind that each work is not necessarily the final one with the last say. Each author has an agenda and it is up to us to decide the merits of each.
