Summary: Flimsy
Comment: I certainly appreciate the intentions of this book, and wish that everything in it were true. However, the punk "movement" (if it can be called such a thing) is not nearly as disciplined or organized as this book makes it appear. As someone who believes in at least many of the platitudes displayed in _Philosophy of Punk_, I have to say that, though I wish it were different, the punk scene often does not live up to the image the O'Hara creates for it. The book is wildly enthusiastic, hardly ever questioning the scene's commitment to a leftist utopian vision. O'Hara seems to have either missed or omitted the fact that punk can have a distinctive reactionary element as well, that it is often dominated by males, that it can be quite hostile to homosexuals and that many individuals involved with it are downright ignorant. That's not to say that punk rock hasn't done great things for me personally or that it isn't a generally positive force in the world, but O'Hara clearly overestimates the movement's importance and clarity. Additionally, the book lacks any real academic credentials. O'Hara cites a handful of the more well known zines in order to underline some of his points, but has no real scientific tools to measure the feelings or beliefs of the punk scene, other than his highly personal (and thus, biased) experience in the scene himself. In large part because of this, the book lacks a real sense of introspection and seems to harbor no doubts about the righteousness of the scene. In my opinion, self-criticism is very punk, and it's complete absence makes the book hardly anything more than propaganda.

Comment: This is a great book, even if it is a bit more left than people are wanting. Generally people view punk as apolitical and stupid and many punk types are, but this is written from the perspective of someone who cares and occasionally he rants and raves and such, but this is one man's view of the philosophy of punk, not just a doctrine. One reviewer here complained that he didn't include enough sources or footnotes, but rwally with this format, its almost not needed unless one wants to research further...
In short its all about opinions, and I don't share the same anarcho-opinions I once did but this book is still great as a history lesson for pre-intenet political punk, not for nostalgia.

Summary: Exactly what it means to be punk.
Comment: There truly is no set philosiphy or guidelines for what punk is or isn't. Though many wish to try and give it one. This book is exactly what punk is. It is one individual telling you how he sees the philosophy of punk. Just like any 'zine would or any band would, he gives his opinion, his point of view. I feel that this book is a great tool for understanding the punk scene in general, his references give a lot of starting places to look for your self and make your own opinions. One might call this little book a primer on punk, more than a philosophy. A lot of the reviews talk about how they feel O'Hara missed the mark that this book doesn't display what they feel punk is, but he says it best in the introduction, if you don't like it write your own book.
