Summary: Disapointing
Comment: Overly technical in places and light on information in others, limited illustrations and photos are very small not the authors best work, the hardcover version only has a glued spine and as such started to split almost immediately.

Summary: Good If Not Spectacular
Comment: Those of you who watch the History Channel may occasionally
recall a British gentleman named Ian V. Hogg who comments on an
amazing range of obscure weaponry, throwing in occasional
opinionated, amusing comments.
Hogg's book GERMAN SECRET WEAPONS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
not surprisingly carries much of the same flavor as his
TV commentaries. It is a survey of German secret weapons
technology during the war, covering everything from aircraft
to missiles to artillery to submarines.
This is at the same time both the strength and the limitation
of this book: it is a compact survey and doesn't get into too
much depth on most subjects. Any good aircraft encyclopedia has
more information on German jet and rocket aircraft, but given
the length of GERMAN SECRET WEAPONS it would be difficult to
cram more in. On the plus side, for subjects such as artillery
where information is harder to find, it does have plenty of
data that might be hard to come by anyplace else.
In sum, I would have to judge this a good but not great book.
It does a good job of surveying the subject and is reasonably
illustrated, but somehow I ended wishing for a more
encyclopedic and generally spiffier piece of work. However,
until something like that shows up, this will do well enough.
I did catch an error in his discussion of the physics of
taper-bore guns -- the explanation is glib but, on examination,
clearly wrong. I suspect the actual explanation is the
Bernoulli effect, the increase in velocity (and, incidentally,
decrease in pressure) of a gas flow as it passes into a
constriction. Not that this is a fatal flaw by any means, just
a small warning to the reader.

Summary: Awesome!!
Comment: Even the book is technical in nature I have read this book several times and it is awesome. It is amazing that the Germany's "wonder weapons" of World War II lead to today's development of inter-continental ballistic missiles and the modern air-to-ground missiles. Just imagine if the war lasted into 1946 we would be dealing with these "wonder weapons". This is a must read for history buffs!!!
