Average Customer Rating: 4.4 (5 reviews)
Rating: 4
Summary: A handy reference.
Comment: Yet another work by Mr Hogg and up to his usual high standards. Highly recommended.
Rating: 4
Summary: Nice Little Survey
Comment: There's a little rule of thumb known as the "Pareto
Principle" that is useful to anybody who tries to explain
something to other folks. This saying has variations
but one way to put it is: 10% of the information gives
you 90% of the knowledge.
That is the principle on which Ian Hogg's neat little
book AMMUNITION, one of the "Greenhill Military Manual"
series, is based. It provides a short (less than 150
pages in a handy small format) description of various
types of ammunition, ranging from small arms ammunition
to assault rifle, machine gun, and cannon ammunition,
through hand and rifle grenades to mortar and artillery
ammunition.
This book does not attempt to provide a comprehensive
discussion of the subject, simply focusing on representative
and sometimes important examples, such as 9 mm Parabellum
and 0.45 caliber ACP piston ammunition, 5.56 and 7.62 mm
NATO ammunition, 0.50 caliber Browning ammunition, and so
on. It focuses largely on ammunition in current use.
It manages to cram in a wide range of different
types of ammunition, including exotic types, for example
describing the "Strix" guided mortar round and also
cluster-munition and mine delivery artillery shells,
with tidy two-page descriptions of each example and a
few sections to provide background.
AMMUNITION is well-organized, well-thought-out, and
tidily (if not exactly spiffily) illustrated. One might
quibble about some of the selections -- for example, it
is a bit puzzling that the old 3.5" Bazooka round is
included but the Soviet RPG is not when it's clearly
the most important handheld rocket launcher ever built
-- but the choices that were made were not bad ones.
While the hardcore ammunition enthusiast will probably
see nothing much new in this book, which is not saying
it might not be entertaining, this is a good buy for
someone who is not all that familiar with the subject.
Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent coverage
Comment: Many cut-aways and diagrams accompany thorough text that really brings a vision of clarity to the reader.
