Summary: ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO BE INQUISITIVE & TO LISTEN & LEARN
Comment: WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW? is a winner because it's clever, well-made, colorful, educational, beautifully illustrated and sturdy. (No, a child can't rip out the ribbons; however, don't give them any scissors! Ha.) Little Rabbit asks his mother, "What makes a rainbow?" and she tells him to ask his friends. He proceeds to ask: Ladybug/Red, Mr. Fox/Orange, Little Chick/Yellow, Mr. Grasshopper/Green, Bluebird/Blue, and Butterfly/Purple. (Where are the MRS.? Hmm.) Every page is predominantly one color and with each turn of the page, a shiny ribbon appears, each under the previous--an inventive idea! Love it.
At the end, Little Rabbit's mother reappears and says, "Now you know what makes a rainbow: RAIN, COLORS--red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and SUNSHINE!" I like the way she suggested he ask others; this shows parents that sometimes it is best to allow your child to answer his/her *own* questions instead of telling them the answers--Stimulate their Imagination and Inquisitiveness! We can learn SO MUCH from others. I love the way this concept shines throughout the story. Great job all around Schwarz, Turner and Gondek--now THIS is Teamwork!
My daughter picked this out at [local store] among many wonderful books. She wouldn't let it go, she just HAD to have it. She has only done this twice; once with a stuffed kitty and the other--this book! WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW? would make a great gift! 8/10 stars....

Summary: Ingredients to a Rainbow
Comment: I think everyone has had a chance to go outside after it rains and notice a bright rainbow hight up in the sky. I know I have, and the first thing I always notice is how many colors their are in it. This book really brought that out with its pictures. It showed all the ingredients and gave all the colors that really make up a rainbow. They not only gave examples of animals for the colors, but they used a very creative way of showing the reader examples. Since it was a pop-up book, the things that would pop up would be ribbons that represented the color in which the book was speaking of. I'm pretty sure that young readers that read this book would find this book not to be a very big bore. They would be attracted by the many varieties of colors in the pictures. I also noticed that this book not only teaches younger children colors, but it can also teach them some different animals. But all together in the end, it showed the ingredients of a magnificent looking rainbow. All it needs is rain, colors(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple), and sunshine. Now that's what makes a rainbow.

Summary: A hit with my kids
Comment: My two-year-olds love this book. It really helped them improve their color recognition. We've changed the ending a bit - they insist singing the "Rainbow" song from Barney at the end of the book.
